What to do After Oral Surgery?

Posted on 1/23/2023 by Beautiful Smiles Office
What to do After Oral Surgery?A resting space at home should be ready for the patient. A fresh pair of sheets should be laid out on a bed, but they should be of a resistant fabric so that accidental spills will not cause too much panic. Properly positioned pillows might aid recovery by lifting the head off the bed.

If the patient has undergone general anesthesia, they should not drive for at least 48 hours. For the first twenty-four hours following surgery, patients should abstain from alcohol and tobacco use. Smoking contributes to bad oral and gum health, so patients can benefit from cutting down or quitting entirely.

To Speed Up Recovery, What Foods should I Take?

The patient's diet will need to be drastically altered for at least the first few days after surgery. The anesthetic should be entirely out of your system when you get up to eating again. Soft foods should be favored to reduce the amount of chewing the patient has to do.

Avoiding acidic or spicy foods can help gums heal faster. Healthy protein shakes like Ensure or Boost can be used as a complement to regular meals. If a patient has recently had surgery, they should avoid using straws to prevent irritating the treated region or loosening stitches.

Ideally, patients would pick up their pre-op prescriptions before the procedure. The patient must adhere to their doctor's orders and take their medication as directed. The surgeon will guide if the patient feels less discomfort than predicted. After the prescribed period has passed, any unused medicine must be disposed of safely.
