|Doctors often prescribe medications in hopes of making us healthier. Unfortunately, while they can make you healthier physically, they can also damage your teeth.
So, even though your illness is gone now you don't want to show off your teeth. There are some medications that you should know are worse for your teeth than others though.
Three Medications Known to Stain Your Teeth
There are three medications that are well-known among dentists for staining your teeth. You'll want to know what these medications are, so you can do your best to avoid them.
First, the antibiotic tetracycline is known to stain your teeth. This is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that's used mainly to treat acne. It should be avoided by young children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers. Mothers need to be particularly careful as this antibiotic can negatively impact the future appearance of their babies' teeth.
Secondly, antihistamines are another medication to watch out for. While they'll relieve your allergies and hay fever's side effects like itchiness and runny nose, they will also stain your teeth.
Third, anti-hypertension medications are important for lowering high blood pressure. However, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, beta-blockers, heart rhythm medications, and diuretics will stain your teeth.
They can also cause you to have a dry mouth, which greatly increases your likelihood of developing tooth decay. If your doctor says these medications are necessary, you should try chewing sugar-free gum to help stimulate the flow of saliva in your mouth.
