Why and How Dry Mouth Can Destroy Your Teeth

Posted on 12/20/2019 by Beautiful Smiles Office
Why and How Dry Mouth Can Destroy Your TeethSaliva is a critical part of the oral ecosystem. It's produced by several glands found in your mouth so as to keep the mouth as moist as possible. Although most people don't think about it, saliva is a crucial aspect of the mouth.

It's made up of mostly water, but it also contains some compounds that help to keep the teeth strong and also digest food when it enters the mouth. Without it someone feels quite uncomfortable and it can even cause you to have problems with your teeth.

Importance of Saliva in the Mouth

One of the most important reasons why we need saliva in the mouth is the comfort it provides. The moist nature of the mouth is critical since a dry mouth is not only uncomfortable, but also a haven of bacteria. Saliva is also crucial in helping you taste foods once they are in the mouth and even providing the necessary lubrication needed to help you swallow.

Saliva and Teeth

For the teeth to thrive, you need to have enough saliva in the mouth. It's instrumental in washing away food particles that would otherwise get stuck in the teeth and bring about plaque later on. As such, for someone who doesn't have enough saliva in their mouth, you will find that there will be a lot of plaque formation on their teeth which can later develop into cavities.

Saliva is also a neutralizing agent for the mouth. It helps in keeping the mouth's pH as constant as possible. When we consume foods that are heavily acidic, the saliva then comes in to get the mouth back to its original space. This then protects the teeth and gums from bacteria that attack the enamel and deteriorates it further.

When you are suffering from xerostomia or a really dry mouth, you will definitely have a problem in attaining fresh breath or retaining it for a long time. In cases where you have little saliva, you can boost the production by chewing sugar free gum, drinking plenty of water and even sucking on sugar free candy.
