Dangers of Not Flossing Often Enough

Posted on 8/10/2020 by Beautiful Smiles Office
Dangers of Not Flossing Often EnoughIf you brush your teeth, don't forget to floss. Flossing supports tooth brushing, as it can get to those hard-to-reach areas. You need to concentrate on these areas as well for overall better dental health. If you downplay the importance of flossing, you can end up with decay between the teeth as well as problems with halitosis or gingivitis.

Why Flossing Is Important

While brushing your teeth keeps bacteria and plaque away from the surface of teeth and along the gum line, flossing can remove the plaque and bad bacteria that settles between the teeth. You can also remove any food that gets stuck between the teeth. If residue or food particles are not removed, they produce sulfur compounds that cause your breath to smell, which also leads to decay. Therefore, after you brush your teeth, always floss them as well. Doing so will ensure that you've done a thorough job of cleaning. Take about two minutes or a little more time to brush your teeth and about the same amount of time to floss.

How Should You Floss?

Flossing your teeth should be done after you have brushed your teeth and rinsed your mouth. Take a piece of floss, about 18 inches long and wrap it around the middle finger. Use the same finger on the other hand to catch the floss you have used. Floss gently up and down between the teeth on each side of each tooth. You may also want to use a water flosser, such as a Water Pik, to make sure you rinse away any remaining particles.

Don't downplay flossing your teeth. Keep them extra healthy by flossing them daily. Flossing should always supplement tooth brushing. If you have not scheduled a professional cleaning in a while, give us a call today. Make an appointment for a check-up, cleaning and x-rays. The cleaner you keep your teeth, the easier it is to keep your teeth free of infection or disease.
