Mold of a CEREC® same-day dental crown from Beautiful Smiles in Woodland, CADental restorations have been used for years to treat a variety of different issues, from cavities to root canals, even cosmetic improvements. It used to be that you would come in for your appointment, have your tooth prepared. Molds were taken of your mouth to send off to a lab to create your permanent restoration, which could often take upwards of two weeks. In the meantime, you were given a temporary restoration to protect your tooth while you waited, and when the permanent one was ready, you would come back to have it fit and placed. At Beautiful Smiles, our goal is to provide you with high quality care, including offering restorations. However, we offer an alternative to the traditional method that is more accurate and saves you valuable time.

Types of Restorations


There are a several types of restorations that require two visits, in which preparation, molds, temporary restorations, time and a fitting of the permanent restoration is completed. These restorations include:
•  Inlays and onlays are used in place of fillings on the chewing surfaces of your teeth to fix damage done to one or more cusps.
•  Veneers are often used to cover cosmetic defects, such as discoloration, gaps, or misshapen teeth.
•  Crowns are used to preserve a tooth after a root canal or after severe damage, or to hold a fixed bridge in place.

These restorations can be made out of a variety of materials, but are usually made from ceramic.

Why Ceramic?


Ceramic is used for several reasons. First and foremost, this particular material has the ability to be made in such a way that perfectly matches the appearance and color of your teeth. It is better accepted into your mouth; your gums are better able to reform around it. Ceramic is also a great material for those who suffer from metal allergies.

What is CEREC®?


CEREC, which stands for Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramic, is the latest technology for dental restorations. With this technology in the office, what used to be a two-visit procedure can be done in a single visit. CEREC is a type of CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) process that allows Dr. James Yang to create your custom restoration on the spot. An optical impression of your mouth is taken and the technology uses that impression to make it.

CEREC offers many benefits over the traditional method of producing dental restorations:
•  You get your permanent restoration faster. There is no waiting for your molds to be sent to a lab, created and sent back to the office. Everything is done right on site. This means that you do not have to take more time out of your busy schedule to have restorations done.
•  The need for temporary restorations is eliminated.
•  CEREC is more accurate. If adjustments need to be made, again, they can be done right on site.
•  CEREC can accommodate the need for multiple restorations. If you need several crowns, veneers or inlays/onlays, the technology can handle that need in one visit.
