Clear Invisalign® Aligners Woodland CA When your teeth are crooked, it can affect your smile, your confidence, and your oral health. Crooked teeth can lead to bruxism (grinding your teeth), uneven tooth wear, jaw pain and an increased risk for tooth decay and gum disease. For years, your only option for correcting crooked teeth was metal braces. At Beautiful Smiles in Woodland, CA, we can correct your crooked teeth using Invisalign®.
What are Traditional Braces?
For decades, crooked teeth have been corrected using metal braces. This treatment involves the use of three basic components – brackets, rings, and archwires. The brackets are affixed to each of your teeth at the beginning of treatment and stay put through the entire process. Rings are attached to your back teeth, and hold the archwires in place. The archwires, which are responsible for the movement and stabilization of your teeth, are attached to each bracket using an elastic O-ring. Metal braces are exceptionally effective, but they are also very prominent, taking over your entire smile and becoming the focal point. Because of this, many of our Woodland CA patients, particularly older teens and adults, tend to shy away from orthodontic work, finding metal braces worse than having crooked teeth.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign offers an alternative to traditional orthodontic treatment with metal braces. The treatment uses rigid, clear plastic aligners that are custom created from 3-dimensional impressions of your mouth. Invisalign aligners are completely invisible when set in your mouth. They are also removable. For you to achieve the best results in the shortest amount of time, however, they should be worn for 20 to 22 hours each day, and should only be removed while eating and to brush your teeth.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign uses a series of aligners to correct your crooked teeth. Each set of aligners is meant to be worn for two weeks at a time. Each set of aligners is slightly different, but they all work together to help you achieve your goals. Instead of a metal archwire, the rigid plastic of the aligner is responsible for the movement, and stabilization, of your teeth. The plastic puts pressure on the teeth, which then puts pressure on your periodontal ligaments. This causes the ligaments to widen, loosening your teeth. The aligners then work to guide your teeth to their correct placement and hold them in place while the ligaments heal.
Treatment times using Invisalign vary. On average, treatment lasts between 9 and 15 months, with most adults seeing results in less than one year. Teens using Invisalign (and in rare instances, some adults) may require two years of treatment. During this time, you will go through 18 to 30 sets of aligners.
